Dear Prospective Applicant: 

We are pleased that you are interested in graduate work in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UCLA. 

Please note the preferred deadline of January 15 for receipt of applications for the following Fall Quarter. However, late applications will be considered if positions are available. Admissions are normally limited to the FALL QUARTER.

The admissions committee requires the following application materials to be submitted directly to the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry: 

  • Statement of Purpose 
  • Letters of Recommendation (3) 
  • Supplementary Information (see below) 
  • Transcripts (2 official copies) 
  • Xerox copies of GRE scores 
  • Departmental application

Statement of Purpose

1. AWARDS/DISTINCTIONS: List academic awards, prizes, honors, fellowships, or other distinctions you have received. 

2. PERTINENT WORK EXPERIENCE: List employment occupation or activities pertinent to your graduate goals during or since your collegiate studies. 

3. PUBLICATIONS/ORGANIZATIONS: If pertinent to your proposed field of study, please list your publications and any scholarly or professional organizations in which you hold membership. 

4. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study, your particular area of specialization within the major field, your plans for future occupation or profession, and any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and your aptitude for graduate study at UCLA.  


Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required on school or business letterhead. Guidelines can be obtained on the online application website. 
  


Supplementary Information 

This information can also be obtained at the online application. 

1. WORK IN PROGRESS: If you are attending a college or university now, please list the work in progress giving us the following information: 

  • Name of institution 
  • Term 
  • Courses 

2. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Please list the names and affiliation of persons from whom you have requested letters of recommendation. Three letters are required for review of your application. 

3. WHAT IS YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE? If your native language is not English, how many years of English language instruction have you had? 

4. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS: If you were supported by your government for any part of your gradaute studies at UCLA, list the amount and duration of support in U.S. dollars. 


Transcripts

Please arrange to have two official copies of your transcripts sent directly to our department. 

GRE Scores 

Send xerox copies of GRE scores to our department. Also arrange to have the official scores sent directly to our office. 

Who should take these exams?

The GRE general test is required and the subject exams are strongly recommended.
